Helmets On, Good Sense Still Required

Friday, December 6th, 2019

We love welcoming skiers and snowboarders to the slopes in Utah, the home of ‘the greatest snow on earth’ and the 2002 Winter Olympics. Here at UtahState.com we encourage our clients to incorporate safe practices while on the slopes, including wearing a helmet. However, a new study coming from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center shows that skiers and snowboarders might be willing to take higher risks after donning their helmets.

The Study

Published in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, the researchers looked at a group of 721 patients treated for ski injuries in at DHMC from 2010-2018. The study was led by surgeons Eleah Porter, MD, and Andrew Crockett, MD.

Results

Overall, sixty-five percent of the patients where wearing helmets. While these patients were less likely to have skull fractures, lacerations or cervical spine injuries, they were more prone to  intracranial hemorrhage – or ‘head bleed’ – as well as other severe injuries. The cause of these severe injuries were most commonly the result of hitting a stationary object.

While not conclusive, the authors of the study speculated that the injuries could have behavioral roots. Such as skiers taking more risks while wearing helmets, under the belief that they are protected from serious injury. The authors also cautioned the public and Ski Patrol members against assuming those wearing helmets don’t need to be evaluated or referred to a trauma center.

Be safe out there on the slopes! In the case of injury, be sure to seek proper medical attention.

New Ski Resort Planned for Utah/Park City

Thursday, December 5th, 2019

Utah is home to world class ski resorts, boasting some of the best skiing in the USA. Now there is exciting news! A brand new Ski resort is expected to open in 2021!

The resort is Mayflower Mountain Resort and Village, located just after the Mayflower exit on Highway 40 near Jordanelle Reservoir. The Resort will have 400 skiable acres. Originally the plans involved a joint venture with Deer Valley, having the two resorts operate as one. However, no funding has been delegated to the New Mayflower Resort from Deer Valley, so it has yet to be seen if that plan will become a reality or not. Also, there has been no word on whether the Mayflower Resort and Village will continue with the Deer Valley policy of skiers only. There is a strong chance that the resort could welcome both skiers and snowboarders. is home to world class ski resorts, boasting some of the best skiing in the USA. Now there is exciting news!
